Getting to South Bend

By Air

Fly Directly into South Bend

South Bend International Airport has direct and connecting flights from about a dozen cities, including Chicago (only on United) and Knoxville, TN (only on Allegiant). Unfortunately, St. Louis isn’t one of them. Please see the airport website for additional direct and connecting cities.

Fly into Chicago

  1. You can hop a connecting flight from Chicago to South on United if you’d like to fly into town. Please see the airport website for additional information. Car rental is available at the airport or we can pick you up. (Wedding party members, readers and immediate family have priority for pickup.)

  2. You can fly into Chicago (either Midway or O’Hare).

    1. Both the Hilton DoubleTree and Marriott have shuttles from the airport to the hotel.

    2. You can rent a car. South Bend is about a 90-minute drive away. (Please note that there are a few toll roads between Chicago and South Bend. You can either pay by credit card or get an EZ Pass. Many rental companies offer EZPass, so be sure to ask.)

    3. You can take the South Shore line train from Chicago to South Bend. The trip begins at Millennium Station and ends at South Bend International airport. It is about two hours each way.

  3. We can come pick you up at either Chicago airport. Please contact Niki or Chris to make arrangements. (Wedding party members, readers and immediate family have priority for pickup.)

Fly into Indianapolis

You can also fly into Indianapolis and rent a car. South Bend is about three hours away and there are no tolls.

By Car

St. Louis is about six hours from South Bend by car. There are three major routes

  1. Through Chicago

  2. Through Champaign via Chicago

  3. Through Indianapolis.

We prefer the route through Indianapolis because it avoids Chicago construction and there are no tolls, but it is a little longer.

By Train

Amtrak runs from the Gateway Station downtown to South Bend several times a day.

Be advised that the trip is between 11-15 hours depending on your route, and that doesn’t include delays.

We can pick you up (wedding party members, readers and immediate family have priority for pickup) or you can call a taxi or ride share to get to the hotel.

What to Do While You’re Here

Antiques

Our area is full of antique stores! There are at least five on 11th Street alone, in Niles, plus two in downtown Niles. These are Niki’s favorites in the area and in Michigan City, which is about 30 mins away.

  • Mishawaka Antiques and The Attic at Mishawaka Antiques (118 Lincolnway E, Mishawaka, IN) - Three huge rooms of antiques, plus a basement. Niki’s favorite.

  • Council Oak Antiques (50981 State Hwy 933, South Bend, IN 46637) Pretty much tied for Niki’s favorite.

  • Picker’s Paradise (2423 S 11th St, Niles, MI 49120) - This is the biggest antique mall Niki has ever seen.

  • The Antique Market of Michigan City (3707 N.E. Frontage Road (at I 94 & US 421) Michigan City, IN) - Tons of jewelry, furniture and decor.

  • Nannie’s Over the Fence (Michigan City, MI) - Located right behind The Antique Store. You can walk from one to the other. Smaller but has some great treasures.

Shopping

South Bend isn’t really known for its shopping, but we do have a mall and some great thrift stores (the clothes at our Goodwills are great). If you’re looking for higher-end items, go to Granger. It’s like Ladue in St. Louis.

South Bend is located in an area of Indiana known as Michiana because we are so close to the Michigan border. While it is its own city, the greater metro area is comprised of three cities: South Bend, Mishawaka and Granger. (Half the time, Niki doesn’t know what city she is in when she’s out and about.) Nearby is also the t own of Niles, Michigan, which you’ll visit if you’re going to the welcome tea.

There is much more to do in South Bend than you might expect. For a complete picture of things to do, check out Visit South Bend. Below are a few highlights of some of Niki and Chris’ favorite places.

Of course, South Bend is famous for being the home of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. There isn’t a game the weekend of the wedding (which means affordable hotel prices, yay!) but you can still visit campus.
